Fuelwise partner with EngageHIV

During the month of May Fuelwise and their clients are partnering with EngageHIV (Charity Reg No: 1092574) to raise money and help fight the HIV and AIDS pandemic in Africa

Today 6, 800 will contract HIV – 1,400 of them will be new born babies
Every minute of every day a child under the age of 15 is infected with HIV
4,000 people will die today in Africa of an AIDS related illness
By 2030 there are expected to be over 30 million orphans as a direct result of the HIV and AIDS pandemic

If you, like me, were shocked when you heard these figures then you will want to take action. Fuelwise and their clients are taking action during the month of May 2010 to help stop the spread of this epidemic that has devastated the continent of Africa for over a generation. During the month of May Fuelwise is asking their clients if they can add just 0.5 cents per litre to every litre of diesel they take on their Fuelwise fuel cards and if they agree Fuelwise will match their pledge and together we are aiming to raise over €15,000 for great cause.

0.5 cents per litre is a small amount to pledge, however, when we all come together it can make a huge amount and a massive difference to the lives of the people it will touch.

For example if you take 2,000 litres (our average client takes 1,400 litres per month) during the month of May you will pay an extra €10 on your invoice. Fuelwise will match that and €20 will be given to EngageHIV. This will be verified by our accountants and our bank. We expect to raise at least €15,000 and if all our clients take part then this could be well over €20,000!

Why are we doing this, especially at a time when Ireland and the UK are in the middle of an economic downturn and the price of fuel is pushing record highs? Well, if the last economic cycle of growth has taught us anything, it is that greed, growth and expansion at any cost are wrong. There must be a way of prospering, not at the expense of others but with social and economic responsibility.

Fuelwise believe (see our mission statement) that every successful company must have a reason for existing. However it should not exist solely to make a profit, but beyond that, to improve in some way the quality of life of its clients and also the industry to which it serves as well as the society in which it operates. Each company – as should each person – contributes to those around it and this should be seen by the standard and quality of work in which it is conducted. I believe we have a social responsibility to help those we can.

Fuelwise understand that some of our customers are being financially challenged at this time, or perhaps you already give to a charity that you have a personal interest in. If this is the case then simply inform us and we will take you off our list and invoice you as normal, no-one should feel emotionally blackmailed, we believe that any donation or gift to charity should be done in the right attitude rather than begrudgingly!
