THE HISTORY OF GPS

GPS BLOG

When we launched our GPS tracking system, Fuelwise Fuel Card Integration, back in 2012, we were the first fuel card company in Ireland that integrated your fuel card data with a GPS tracking system. However, the history of GPS is much longer and dates back to the 1960s, making vast improvements as technology has developed.

WHAT IS GPS?
GPS is an acronym for Global Positioning System, which is a number of satellites that circle our planet and send signals to earth of their position in space. GPS receivers send signals to earth through GPS devices, which makes it possible to track the exact location, speed and time of vehicles, these are also known as navigation devices.

THE FIRST USE OF GPS
GPS was first developed by the Soviet Union during the 1950s, when they were launching their Sputnik Spacecraft, however, it wasn’t until the 1960s that GPS was first used for any meaningful purpose. This was during the Cold War when GPS was used as a means of gathering information and intelligence on enemy positions and locations.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
As explained above, GPS works through a number of satellites that circle the globe, there is between 24 and 32 satellites operating at all times. Positioned at fixed points, these satellites beam down signals to anyone on earth that has a GPS receiver. The signals sent from earth can pinpoint the precise location, time and speed of those with a GPS receiver through a time code and geographical data point.

EVERYDAY USAGE OF GPS IN FLEET MANAGEMENT
GPS is used throughout many industries around the world on a daily basis, but it is vitally important to many in the fleet management industry. As far as fleet management is concerned, GPS tracking allows fleet owners and fleet managers to get quick information about vehicles on a map or in the form of reports. This information can be later cross-checked with other fleet relevant information (maintenance, fuel consumption and driver behaviour), combining time and location with other data, in order to get real fleet intelligence. Powerful insights help you in making decisions for your fleet.
